White Box Challenge

*I've been a bad blogger this week... Thanks for reading and I'll try to be better next week!

I love HGTV. Unfortunately, cable isn't in my budget so I have to settle for what's online. I was so happy when I found out that Design Star was on Hulu. My favorite challenge on that show is called 'White Box Challenge." If you've never seen the show the challenge is exactly what it sounds like. The contestants are given a room that is completely white and with a small budget they have to shop at somewhere strange like a hardware store, dollar store, or the grocery store and transform what they get there into an amazing space that is create and showcases their design style. Sounds super hard right? Here are some amazing rooms from the show.

Amazing right? The reason I'm writing about this is to psych myself up for my own semi-white box challenge that I've got going on. I recently volunteered to be a Sunday school teacher for 3 year olds at my church. The room I'm teaching in has been unused all summer and I have been given about $20 to fix it up a bit before I start this week. Here is the room as is:

Okay so it isn't white and it isn't exactly empty but it is definitely a box and it is most certainly going to be a challenge! Any ideas?? I could use all the help I can get. I'm thinking about hanging some things from the ceiling and doing a little rearranging. But mostly I'm at a loss for ideas. Help please!

Hey Jasmin!
I love reading your blogs :) in my preschool classroom I have a draped hanging piece of burlap attached to two small rods with shower curtain clips to separate areas in my classroom. The kids also came up with an idea to hang a large branch from the ceiling with hooks and wire and hang beaded pieces and clay pieces from them. It looks Earthy and beautiful, the kids love that their work is represented in their space, and it's relatively inexpensive! We also have a cozy corner for meeting time/story time which it seems like you might have a natural one in your space. An old couch with any old side table and a lamp plus some original Art pieces from the kids or even each one of their Portraits framed or mounted on the wall would add a nice touch and a homey element. Something I've always wanted to do in my classroom is to bring in an adult sized kitchen table with adult sized chairs or a bench for a large work space. Don't leave a lot of large open spaces in the room as this will encourage running as well :) you can define areas with low shelves, hanging curtains and area rugs :) hope this helps some! Best of luck!!!

Hi Colleen! Thank you so much for reading and for the great ideas!! I really appreciate the feedback. I am really at a loss as to how to make this room come together so I seriously appreciate hearing what you did in your classroom. It sounds like an awesome classroom! Hopefully I'll be back later this week or next with an update on how it all came together.

I know I'm mega late to the party and don't know if you still need ideas, but you could have the kids help with (almost) free posters--have them paint all over in the rooms color scheme--then do a similar idea with the "all you need is love" print from younghouselove. As well as some blue pompoms like this: http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/tissue-paper-pom-poms-how-to# Again, almost free but a bit more fun!

Thanks for the suggestions Maren! I need all the help I can get... I hope to do an update soon on what I've done so far in the room. I actually did those exact pom pom flowers that you suggested haha!
